Photography is Dead
Written by: Rafael Alvarez
Are we fighting a loosing battle to make it to the Top? In life death is inevitable but does that also apply to the photography industry? Since the death of my mother in 1991 I've come to terms that one day death may snatch me from this world. I know it can happen with out a moments notice. I'm also ok with that. If God took me tomorrow I'd be ready to go. If he took me right now I'd be pretty bummed out that I wasn't able to finish writing this but I'd I'm sure I'd get over it.
I had a friend once tell me that I'm fascinated with death. I did quite a bit of thinking about what she said. She might be right but not on the level that most people would think. I assume that most people would think I'm some sort of weirdo that likes looking at dead things but that's not the case here. Honestly seeing something dead whether it be an animal or human it tends to pulls at my heart. It more than likely will bring back bad memories. My fascination with death is targeted towards what happens after death and the mystery of who they where before their death. We've all got a story behind our life, some of us never tell a soul while others scream it from roof tops.
Maybe this fascination with death is the reason I'm holding on so tight to my work in the photography industry. Maybe when it dies I want to go down as a significant part of the mystery of its life. Some people think the Photography industry is already dead. My thoughts are that only true original art can save its legacy as a form of art. So many traditional Artists disregard photography and don't consider it a true form of art. I can honestly understand this idea but I still don't agree with it. There are many great art photographers out there that produce truly original work, we're just hard to find.
Photography maybe dead but I'm going to stick around long enough to see what happens after its last breath. I'm an Artist and with my death my work will bring dreams, prayers, and life to the mystery of who we were and what we will become.
